The Dragons Review: Patchwork Heroes

*This game was purchased by the reviewer. All opinions in this review are the reviewers & no one else.

Patchwork Heroes (PlayStation Portable)
Developed by: Acquire
Published by: Sony
Released on: March 18, 2010
MSRP: $9.99 (PSN Only)

I like different, original games, and the PSP  has a lot of them which is great. Also If you have not heard of  Patchwork Heroes it is understandable as the marketing was essentially non-existent & it was only released as a PSN download.

In Patchwork Heroes, you play as a young pilot named Titori.  Your village is being attacked by fleets of warships on a daily bases &  it's your job to destroy them so you can save the village from destruction. The game is presented as a side view of the airship, looking at the back of Titori & his crew as he crawls around  on the hull of the ship. Armed with nothing more than a saw & the aid of your fellow crew mates, you'll land on these ships & cut them apart piece by piece like a piece of paper before they reach your village.

Patchwork Heroes has simple controls & slowly builds upon it as you progress through the levels. Power-ups give players new abilities, & the ships get increasingly more dangerous as the change shape, size as you progress. More, & newer enemies try & stop you from destroying the ship you will have to find newer ways to take them down & have a better eye on what is going on the screen. Cutting off sections of the ship with enemies will give you energy to perform a special move called a Mojo attack that will allow you to cut through the reinforced areas of the hull. You can also sacrifice one of your fellow crew members which will become a bomb & kamikaze a large part of the ship.

While lots of missions ask for you disassemble a ship, some are more complicated. For instance, you might be asked to leave one part of the ship alone, meaning you can't play like a complete maniac & have to take your time. There are a total of 30 story missions, & four difficulty levels for each. Additionally, there are challenge missions. You start with ten levels, & after you complete each one, you unlock a new set of ten mission to play. These mission can get damn hard even when you have the difficulty set to easy.  Percentage completion of the game is based on playing on every difficulty & making sure every unique citizens on every level survive the fight till the end of the mission.

In the end this game is a must have for any psp owner that likes those quirky Japanese games & the price cannot be denied. It is a lot of fun for 10 dollars than you will ever have with many other video games out there. The art style is stellar, game mechanics are top notch & of course it is just a load of fun as you take down ship after ship. If you have not already picked this game up i recommend this to all you who have a psp & are at least a little interested in the game.

This week was better than last week. I already own Wipeout HD so i will not be getting that but anyone who dose not already have it should give a try.  I pre-ordered Sam & Max so i will be downloading that along with the Skate 3 demo. Final Fight: Double Impact looks like it might be a good game so i may get it but have yet to make up my mind. Oh & if you did not know it comes with Magic Sword so you are getting 2 games. Well until next week this has been your PS Store update of the week.

PlayStation Home Update for April 15

This week looks like there is a decent update for PS Home. There will be a few new space, & as always some new clothing/ furniture for purchase in the mall. Now on to the new stuff. We will see the launch of the SOCOM OPFOR game space, which will allow players to assemble an assault weapon in a mini-game & then load out into SOCOM: Confrontation with a Gold AK-47 an exclusive weapon only available to the players who can complete the mini-game in 12 seconds or less. Also according to the PS Blog Associate Producer KC Coleman had this to say about the new addition to PlayStation Home:

"The ability [for PlayStation Home users] to unlock the Golden AK-47 in SOCOM: Confrontation is a huge step forward for Home as a platform and for the fans of the PS3 in general. We’ve long prided ourselves on being able to expand the experience of favorite PS3 titles by creating complementary content in Home, but this is the first time we’ve brought that experience back around to the disc game.
It’s truly a win-win-win situation. It’s a win for Home because we have opened up a huge door that will allow developers to continue to blur the line between PlayStation Home and PS3 games. It’s a win for SOCOM: Confrontation as a title because it allows them to continue to offer great content to players. And, of course, it’s a win for the millions of fans of Home and SOCOM: Confrontation because they get exclusive, meaningful, and 100% free content that is unlocked not from merely downloading an expansion pack, but by playing a fun game."
In addition to the Gold AK-47 mini-game, the SOCOM OPFOR space has the  5-Finger Fillet mini-game with leaderboards.

This week will also see the introduction of the Monkey Island franchise into PlayStation Home. The PlayStation Home Mall will have the Ghost Pirate Ship personal space (complete with rewards), furniture items, & some Monkey Island costumes. Also being re-releasing this week is the new & improved Gamer’s Lounge. They have added music, a Liar’s Dice mini-game, a ticker that pulls from the official PlayStation Twitter account & a survey that rewards participants with a special virtual item. The Gamer’s Lounge will now host the daily Featured Game parties, which have been held previously at Listen@Home in Central Plaza.

This week is looking like a decent update & if you have not checked out PS Home i recommend you at least give it a try. It is free after all & who know maybe you will see me on playing one of the many mini games or just hanging around from time to time. For more information check out the PS Blog &/ AlphaZone4.

The Dragons Weekly Recap For April 4-10

I decided to start something new on the blog called the dragons weekly recap. I will write a little bit about what i been playing along with whatever else i feel like writing about. Any feedback or comments are appreciated & all are accepted. I don't delete comments unless they are flaming other commenter's or spamming so feel to write anything you feel like writing.

This past week i really have not had that much time to game with all the overtime i been working.(This week looks like it will be the same. >_<) But i always try & make a few hours a day to get something in. I got around to finishing up a stay on zach island in Dead or Alive Paradise on the PSP. All i have to say about the game is that it is not that good one bit. For one i had no clue what the objective to the game was for the first few hours, to tell you the truth i still have no clue. I mainly bought the game because i loved the DOA fighting games on the PS1 & 2. I knew that this game was not a fighting game but was all about the girls of DOA but i never really knew what to expect. What i ended up getting was some game with mini games & the ability to dress up the girls in new bikinis. I will get around to reviewing it at some point but do not expect anything high.

For the PlayStation 3 i finally started up Last Rebellion. I also plan on writing a review of it. I know that the game has not been getting great reviews but i think the game is worth it for any real hard core jrpg fan if they have nothing else to play. It is worth a purchase if you need a jrpg fix & do not know of anything else to get. My review will be basing this game on what it is & not going to be comparing it to other RPG's on the PS3.I also got a little BF:BC2 online in but not much. The game is great as always.

On the PC i have only been playing a little AstroEmpires which is a browser based mmo strategy game. I always have some time to check in on the game because it dose not take much to just log in & move my ships or just build up my bases & fleet. Other than that i have not gotten around to playing anything else. I really do wish i had the time to invest in more games but work keeps getting in the way. I also bought the games i did not already have from rpg sale but have yet to play them or even install them yet.

Maybe this week i will  get more chances to play some more video games & not be so exhausted from work that all i do is sleep or lack there of. This week you can look forward to at least one new review for a game on the PS3. Other than that there will be the usual PS home update, along with PS store update. If anything else gets posted it will be all be based on how much time i have & if anything new comes up that i feel like writing about. Have a great week everyone & play those video games. ^^

*These DOA:Paradise pics where taken by me in game. Later on when i get my site up you will be able to find these & others.

The Dragons Review: Battlefield Bad Company 2

*This review is based on the PS3 version of the game & was purchased by the reviewer. All opinions in this review are the reviewers & no one else.

The game may have been out for a month now but it is never late for some opinions on a game. With that said EA & DICE have developed a great game that gamers will be playing for a long time to come. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 ups the visual prowess of its predecessor (BF:BC), while still delivering one of the most compelling multiplayer games to come out in a long time. I would even put it up to MW2 & in some aspects it is a over all better experience than MW2 will ever be.

The single player starts you off during world war 2 as a secret ops group of soldiers. This part dose not last long but is just a introduction to what the members of Bad Company will be searching for later in the game. After that is all done you will be put into the role of Preston Marlowe, for those who played the first bad company this is the same guy you played before. The group of soldiers go around the world on the hunt for a weapon of mass destruction which must not fall into the hands of the Russians. The story will take you across a variety of locations that range from frozen mountains to dense jungles & even to a dried up lake that has become a desert.

DICE also did a very nice job blending the particle effects & game objects in the foreground with the static backdrops. Your buddy AI dose a great job of covering your back but at times they can be lacking. Nothing can beat a real person when it comes to reliability. The campaign is good for a FPS. You fellow comrades of Bravo Two can be funny at times but is far from hilarious. There's tons of variety to the game play & all of it is a great deal of fun but this isn't the kind of campaign you'll be returning to again & again other than to get any trophies you missed your first time through.

For some gamers, the shortcomings in the campaign will not matter. These people come for the multiplayer, and that's where Bad Company 2 shines the most. Here the destructibility of the campaign take destruction 2.0 to a whole new meaning. Your targets might be waiting inside a house or using a tower. This can change with just a few well placed explosives or aimed rpgs as you level the playing field around them. This adds an extra bit of strategy to a already awesome game as you work through extended battles, adapting your approach to the fight as the world around you alters.

There are 4 different multiplayer game modes to choose from. First you have Rush which you defend or destroy a station depending what side you are on for as long as you can. Then there is conquest which you try & capture & hold flags for as long as possible. Squad rush is the mode where you play on a 2 man squad going up against another one in competition over 2 stations. Finally we have squad deathmatch where 4 squads go head to head to get the most kills. When you first enter a multiplayer match the game ask if you would like to join a squad, here it will put you into a open squad which are made up of 4 players each. From there you get to choose what type of class you would like to play as. You have your choices from Medic, Engineer, assault, & recon which each have a set load-out & customization to them that are unique to each one. All of this will keep you busy for hours & hours with more to come in the months ahead.

Over all the campaign mode is decent for a FPS but it dose have its issues as well the AI not being the most helpful. The main reason to get this game would be for the online multiplayer which will keep you busy for many many hours longer than the single player could ever hope to. For a few hours i played the online, this is a must buy for any FPS fan that wants a team based shooter with plenty of customization & with large maps with the ability to take out anyone any where whether they be hiding out in a building of controlling one of the many vehicles there are in the game.

Screenshots of Enslaved: Odyssey To The West

Enslaved: Odyssey To The West is a PS3 & Xbox 360 game set in the future in a post apocalyptic world. It is due out in Q4 of 2010 & is a action adventure game by the team that brought us Heavenly Sword(Ninja Theory Ltd.)for the PS3. The game is being published by Namco Bandai Games.

I know i am going to be keeping a eye on this game the girl Trip reminds me of Nariko from Heavenly Sword. Even though i never bought Ninja Theory's last game for the PS3 this one looks like one that i will have to keep a eye out for. I will keep posting up on the game as i learn more as the launch get closer.

        STEAM : Weekend Deals

If you have not checked out STEAM yet you should give it a look this weekend. Until Monday 10A.M. PDT Borderlands is 50% off. They also have the Four pack for 50% which gives you 4 copied of the game so you can gift it to 3 friends.

If you do not know what Borderlands is it is a FPS RPG. Developed by Gearbox Software for the PS3, Xbox 360 & PC.The game runs on the Unreal engine but dose not look like most other games you have seen that use Unreal engine. Borderlands has a distinctive art style to it, with a large loot system made up of thousands of guns to collect & use.

I have the game for the PS3(& i love it)if you have yet to purchase the game, now is a great time to do it. If you enjoy a FPS or even RPG with great coop this is a game to get. The story is not that important in this game it is all about the loot & playing with friends in coop.
